Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)

The SFMA is a clinical assessment tool that our Osteopaths use to make a movement based diagnosis to find the the cause of the patient’s pain, not just the location.

Developed in the USA by industry leading Physiotherapists & Chiropractors (Gray Cook, Greg Rose, Kyle Kiesel of Functional Movement Systems). The SFMA consists of seven key movement patterns named the ‘Top Tier Assessment’, the findings of this assessment will guide the practitioner to the body areas that require further biomechanical analysis with the goal of finding the specific cause (soft tissue, joint, motor control) of why they are experiencing pain.

Key Concepts of the SFMA are:

  • Regional Interdependence (Mobility vs Stability).

  • Pain alters motor control.

  • The neurodevelopmental sequence (the normal patterns and postures a child progresses through in early development).
