Joint Manipulation (HVLA)

Joint Manipulation is an intervention that is used by Osteopaths, Chiropractors & Physiotherapists.

Often referred to as an ‘adjustment’ or ‘cracking’ the technique is used to improve range of motion and reduce pain in joints of the spine and the extremities.

The patient is positioned so the practitioner can deliver a short fast thrust which is sometimes followed by an audible ‘pop’. The patient may then experience immediate pain relief or increased range of motion in the area.

However, manipulation is not suitable for every patient and some patients prefer not to receive manipulation.

Furthermore, certain myth’s around the mechanisms and outcomes of manipulation are common. These include "bones being put back into place” and “spines being realigned”, unfortunately these narratives have no basis in current understanding of what is actually happening nor are they helpful for the patients in the long term.

What manipulation can be used for:

  • Reduce pain.

  • Improve range of motion

  • Create a ‘window of opportunity’' for patients to engage in rehabilitation exercises.

Your individual practitioner will discuss if manipulation may be a suitable treatment for you as part of your overall treatment plan.
